Meerut, Uttar Pradesh — Five policemen have been removed from their posts after a video allegedly showing Dalit women being beaten up during a land dispute in Meerut’s Incholi area went viral on social media. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon and sparked outrage.
The viral video shows a police team entering the house of two brothers named Sushil Kumar and Anil Kumar and beating the women with sticks amid an ongoing dispute over a wasteland.
Narrating the incident, victim Kavita Devi said, “When we were having a land dispute, the police entered our house and when we did not follow their orders, they brutally beat us with sticks. Instead of taking action against these policemen, the authorities first filed cases against us and sent Sushil, Anil and my mother-in-law to jail.”
Following the incident, Bhim Army members, Samajwadi Party MLA Atul Pradhan and Congress MP from Saharanpur Imran Masood staged protests and demanded immediate action against the accused policemen.
Meerut police confirmed that the five policemen who have been sent to the police lines include Incholi police station in-charge Nitin Pandey, Lavad outpost in-charge sub-inspector Indresh Vikram Singh, sub-inspectors Sumit Gupta and Pawan Saini, and constable Mohammad Wasim.
Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Vipin Tada has ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter, which will be conducted by SP (Crime) Avnish Kumar. A police officer said that action has been taken against these five policemen after Kumar’s report.
