Odisha: IIC registers case against self for allegedly harassing Dalit couple

Jajpur, In a rare instance, an inspector-in-charge (IIC) of a police station in Odisha’s Jajpur district has registered a case against himself for allegedly harassing and misbehaving with a Dalit couple.
The IIC of Korei police station in the district, Shravan Kumar Maharana, has registered a case against himself.
Sources said one Balaram Jena of Chanchania village was taken into custody over allegations of tractor theft. Later, when Balaram’s wife reached the police station next day to inquire about her husband, Maharana allegedly misbehaved with her.
It has also been alleged that the IIC kept Balaram at the police station for a couple of days and harassed him. Later, he was released from the police station after the stolen tractor was traced.
Thereafter, Balaram’s family members reportedly knocked the doors of the Superintendent of Police (SP) at his Panikoili office seeking justice and strict action against the IIC.
Following this, Jajpur SP Rahul P R ordered for a joint inquiry into the incident.
Based on the report of the inquiry, Jajpur SP directed the Korei IIC to register a case and appointed the DSP Pramod Kumar Mallik as the investigating officer (IO).
On the SP’s direction, IIC Maharana registered a case against himself at the police station on Friday.
Investigation into the matter is underway and appropriate action will be taken against the accused, said DSP Mallik.
