INDORE: A 40-year-old tribal was allegedly thrashed by the officer in charge of Mortakka police outpost in Khandwa district, apparently for refusing to pay a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to ‘settle a case’ related to illegal liquor sale. The accused ASI, Akhilesh Mandloi, was suspended on Tuesday.
The victim, Badri Mehta, a resident of Dukiya village in Mortakka, was arrested on July 7 under Section 151 of CrPC and released on bail by a magistrate the same day, ASP Seema Alawa said.
Badri alleged that he was beaten up by ASI Akhilesh Mandloi and lodged a complaint with Khandwa SP Satyendra Shukla. His family also protested. The SP initiated an inquiry and on the basis of the report, suspended Mandloi.
“Badri Mehta and his family alleged that he was taken to the police station and allegedly thrashed by the ASI, who then took Rs 80,000 from him to settle the case. During investigation, the allegations made by Badri were found to be true, so the ASI was suspended by the SP,” said Alawa.

I accepted it before the police,” he said, adding: “ASI Mandloi demanded Rs 1 lakh from me. When I said that I did not have that much money, he beat me with sticks. I was bleeding and suffered bruises and injuries on my limbs and torso. It was only after we paid Rs 80,000 that he allowed me to leave.” “We transferred Rs 60,000 to the account of a petrol pump owner and the rest Rs 20,000 to another person,” Badri added.
SP Shukla told TOI, “Badri has accepted that he was selling liquor illegally, but this doesn’t give the police officer any right to beat him or extort money from him.”
The illicit liquor trade is a separate case and investigations are being carried out to ascertain the charges, he added.
