UP News: Allegation of rape after conversion of Dalit woman, report filed against eight including main accused

Posted on November 5, 2024 by Dalit Times

A Dalit woman in Rampur alleged that she was raped and converted on the pretext of marriage. Police have registered a case against eight people including the main accused and arrested three.

UP News : A Dalit woman from a village in Rampur’s Patwai police station area has alleged that she was converted on the pretext of marriage and then raped. The victim lodged a complaint with the police, on the basis of which a case has been registered against eight people including the main accused Jamshed Alam. The police have arrested three people including the main accused and sent them to jail.

The visits to the court started due to a dispute with her husband

The victim woman told in her complaint that for the last two years she was having a dispute with her husband, due to which she had to frequently visit Rampur court. During this time she met Jamshed Alam, resident of Laxman Nagla of Thana Tanda. It is alleged that Jamshed told his name as Vivek and said that he was a Hindu and trapped her in a love trap. He kept having physical relations with the woman for a year by promising marriage. When the woman objected to this, he came to her house and started living there.

Marriage according to Hindu customs and revealing the truth

Under pressure from the woman, the accused married her in a temple in Saifni according to Hindu customs. But a few days after the marriage, the woman came to know that Jamshed was already married and was a Muslim. When the victim opposed this, the accused put a condition on her to convert to Islam and divorce his first wife.

Pressure to convert and marriage

After this, the accused along with his family pressurized the woman and she was forcibly converted at the house of Qazi Shaukat Ali Khan. On June 20, 2024, the victim was married to Jamshed. The victim alleged that she was mentally and physically tortured during this entire incident.

Case registered against the accused, three arrested

On the complaint of the woman, the police registered a case against Jamshed Alam alias Vivek, his mother Sabroon, father Bhura, sister Sofia, brothers Iqbal, Maqsood, Qazi Shaukat Ali Khan and brother-in-law Mohammad Shakir. The police have arrested Jamshed Alam alias Vivek, Maqsood and Mohammad Shakir and sent them to jail. The search for other accused is on and the police is investigating the case thoroughly.

Conversion and rape case: A social challenge

This case is not just a crime but a symbol of a social challenge, in which a Dalit woman was lured with false promises, converted and raped. The police administration has taken action by taking the case seriously, but this incident also highlights the need for awareness about such crimes in the society.
