Lucknow: An atmosphere of tension prevailed in Naushera village of Azamgarh on Monday when a 24-year-old Dalit loco pilot was brutally murdered. It is alleged that six people first beat up the youth badly and then forcibly made him drink poison due to a love affair dispute. After this incident, the family of the deceased and the local people got angry and blocked the Azamgarh-Gorakhpur National Highway demanding strict action against the accused.
Seeing the seriousness of the situation, police force and senior officers from three police stations reached the spot and removed the protesters from there by assuring strict action.

The deceased has been identified as Durgesh Kumar, son of Indal Ram, a resident of Naushera village of Jianpur police station area. Durgesh was working as a loco pilot in the Railways since 2021 and was posted in Gorakhpur and Chandigarh. It is being told that he had a love affair with the daughter of Ganesh Yadav of the same village, which the girl’s family was constantly opposing.
According to Ajit Kumar, the younger brother of the deceased, on Saturday evening, a person named Gyanendra Mishra called Durgesh on the pretext of “solving the matter”. When Durgesh reached the place mentioned, Ganesh Yadav, Ajay Yadav, Shravan Yadav, Sheru Yadav, Govind Yadav and Mishra surrounded him. A video clip of this incident has also surfaced, in which it is clearly seen that several people together are slapping the young man and beating him after throwing him on the ground. Ajit alleged that after this the accused forcibly made Durgesh drink some poisonous substance and fled after throwing him at a deserted place.

After getting free from the attackers, Durgesh somehow called his brother Ajit from the other mobile phone in his pocket. He narrated the entire story of the brutality that happened to him and also told the names of those who attacked him. On receiving the call from his brother, Ajit immediately reached the spot and took Durgesh to the hospital, but within a few minutes of reaching there, the doctors declared him dead.
Highway blocked by placing dead body, heavy police force deployed
After the post-mortem, when Durgesh’s body reached home, there was chaos in the family. The grieving family along with the villagers placed the body on the highway and started a huge protest demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. Due to this blockade, long queues of vehicles were formed on the highway.
The police tried hard to calm the crowd, but people were not ready to listen. In view of the tense situation in the area, police from three police stations and PAC personnel were deployed. Seeing his son’s dead body, the father broke down and said, “He was the only breadwinner of my family. They took away my son, the light of my eyes.”
Police action
SP (rural) Chirag Jain confirmed the case and said that an FIR has been lodged against six named accused under murder and related sections. He said, “The victim’s family has alleged that he was beaten up and forced to consume poison. The accused are clearly visible in the video evidence. Continuous raids are being conducted to arrest them.”
Meanwhile, ADG Piyush Mordia of Varanasi Zone informed that the autopsy report has stated that the cause of death was poison and the viscera has been preserved for further investigation. At present, police force is deployed in the village and every possible effort is being made to catch the accused.
