Two to die for rape, murder in Barishal

A Barishal tribunal has sentenced two men to death for raping and murdering a woman and later dumping her body in a canal in Hizla upazila in 2013.
Judge Md Rokibul Islam of the Barishal Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict in the presence of the convicts yesterday afternoon.
The convicts are Kabir Akon, 28, and Jabbar Bepari, 45 — both residents of Purbokoralia village in Hizla upazila.
According to the prosecution, on July 28, 2013, the victim was on her way home when the convicts ambushed her, took her to a nearby garden and raped her. They later killed her and dumped the body in the Shilnia canal after tying her hands and feet.
Following the incident, the victim’s uncle, Moktar Hossain, filed a murder case with Hizla Police Station on July 30, 2013.
Police initially arrested Kabir Akon based on local witnesses’ accounts. After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against the two accused.
The court delivered the judgement after recording testimonies of 18 witnesses.
