UP: Constable beats dalit cop to death, hangs him to pass it off as suicide

AGRA: UP police constable Ashish Kumar, 25, who was found hanging in his rented house in Mathura on Thursday, was allegedly thrashed before being hanged from a ceiling fan by a fellow cop, police said on Saturday. The accused policeman, Rohit Dhangar, has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
Police said during investigation it was found that Dhangar assaulted Kumar with sticks after a verbal spat and later strangled him with a rope. The accused had then hung his body from a fan to make it appear like “suicide”. Both were from Meerut district and posted at Naujheel police station. The post-mortem report, too, revealed several injury marks on the victim’s body, said SP (rural) Shirish Chandra. An FIR has been registered under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and the SC/ST Act against the accused on the basis of a complaint lodged by Kumar’s parents.
‘His room partner used to pass casteist slurs’
The dead cop’s family alleged that Dhangar, who was his room partner, had problems with Kumar “as he belonged to the Dalit community”.
In the police complaint, the victim’s father, Ravindra Kumar, stated that a few days ago his son had told his brother Rajnish that his room partner used to abuse him and pass “casteist slurs” and had even “threatened to kill him”.
