On the evening of 12 August 2022 in Kadar Chowk area of Budaun in UP, a case of assault with Scheduled Caste people who were performing the last rites of the dead body at Jori Nagla Ghat came to light. According to locals, earlier there was a scuffle between the two sides over caste. On protesting, a fight ensued, in which two people were injured. Both the sides reached the police station. In these, people belonging to the Scheduled Castes have given a complaint to the police.

Kranti Devi wife Prem Vihari Valmiki, a Dalit elderly resident of Nurpur village of Kadarchowk area of Budaun in UP, died on the morning of 12 August due to prolonged illness. Throughout the day the process of visiting his relatives continued.
According to the villagers, all the family members and their relatives took the body of Kranti Devi to Jori Nagla Ghat to perform the last rites at around 5 pm. They started the process of cremation of the dead body. The fire was given. After that all the people went and sat under a tree. There were already some people grazing their animals. He also left his animals and came and sat under the tree.
It is alleged that, when the conversation started between them, the said people came to know that he belonged to the Scheduled Castes. He scoffed at this. When the Scheduled Caste people protested, they were beaten up. Little Valmiki and Bhojraj Yadav have been injured. Late in the evening both the sides reached Kadar Chowk police station.
SP City Amit Kishore Srivastava said, “The accused have been sent to jail after registering a case on the complaint of the victim.”
