According to a report published in The Quint, the father of Dalit youth Gaurav has alleged that the Kasganj police beat his son badly in police custody and when his condition started deteriorating, the police tried to show suicide.
According to the information, 20-year-old Dalit youth Gaurav, resident of Raslua Sulehpur village of Kasganj, was allegedly kept in custody by the Amanpur police station for 6 days and on the sixth day itself, the case of his alleged attempt to commit suicide came to light. On the morning of Friday 9 February, Gaurav was found hanging from a muffler in the women’s toilet of the police station. Currently, Gaurav is breathing on a ventilator and is undergoing treatment at the Medical College, Aligarh. Due to his condition being very critical, he has been put on ventilator.
Why was Gaurav kept in custody?
According to the information coming to light, an FIR was lodged against an unknown person on 2 February 2024 at Amapur police station in Kasganj district after the case of missing of a minor girl came to light. In the same case, on 3rd February i.e. the next day, Amanpur police station brought 20 year old Dalit youth Gaurav for questioning and since then he was in police custody.
In a conversation with The Quint, Gaurav’s father Raghuraj Singh said that when he reached the police station to meet his son on February 3, the police told him that they had brought his son for questioning and would release him after some time, but he was not released. Rather, Gaurav was kept in the custody of the police station for 6 days. On February 9, 2024, when the family reached the police station to meet Gaurav, they were told that Gaurav had tried to commit suicide by hanging himself and he was taken to the hospital. Gaurav’s father Raghuraj Singh alleges that his son was beaten in custody and after his condition deteriorated, the police tried to show it as suicide.
According to Raghuraj Singh, my son Gaurav was beaten by the police throughout the night and when the policemen thought he was dead, they hanged him in the bathroom. After this the police pretended to break the bathroom door. Gaurav’s father claims that some other boys who were in police custody in other cases have told that Gaurav was beaten badly and he had become unconscious. Now the police are saying that Gaurav hanged himself with a muffler, whereas he did not have a muffler or any such thing with the help of which he could have hanged himself.
