A team of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has arrested two men in connection with a case filed over raping a woman in Narayanganj.
The arrestees include the prime accused Nazmul Islam, 25, who was arrested around 3:00pm yesterday from the Purba Lamapara area in Fatullah. Later, another accused, Md Rony, 25, was arrested by Rab-1 from Gazipur around 7:15pm.
Lt Col HM Shazzad Hossain, commanding officer of Rab-11, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing at his office in Siddhirganj’s Adamjee this evening.
According to the case statement, the victim and her husband were tenants in the house of the prime accused. On the night of February 18, Nazmul and his associates allegedly held the victim’s husband captive, physically assaulted him, and recorded a video of the torture. Using the footage as leverage, they then gang-raped the woman.
The 20-year-old victim is a second-year student at Narayanganj Government Mohila College and works at a local garment factory, while her husband is employed at another factory.
The victim in the case statement said she called “999” on the night of the incident, but didn’t get the necessary help. Police initially refused to register a case or arrange for an immediate medical examination.
On Tuesday, eight days after the incident, a case was recorded at Fatullah Model Police Station. The following day, under police supervision, the victim underwent a medical examination.
Outraged by the delayed response, students of Narayanganj Government Mohila College staged a protest yesterday, demanding the immediate arrest of all those involved.
Later in the day, leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra Federation held a press conference condemning the police’s alleged inaction. Farhana Manik Muna, president of the student wing, issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding justice for the victim.
