Dalit’s wedding procession and youths’ rampage, what happened in Meerut, UP, read every detail

Dalit Sanjeev, a resident of Bhokarheri village in Muzaffarnagar district, was married to a Dalit girl from Rajput-dominated Kalindi village in Meerut. On Saturday afternoon, Sanjeev reached the baraat ghar in Kalindi village with his wedding procession.

Meerut: In Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit wedding procession was attacked by some domineering Rajput youths of the same village. The attackers, armed with sticks, beat up the groom and the women and also looted them. The distraught baraatis, including women, reached the police station to save their lives and demanded protection. In this environment, the wedding rituals were halted for several hours. Meerut police officials deployed a heavy police force in the village, only then the Dalits could muster the courage to perform the wedding rituals.
The wedding procession was of a youth from Muzaffarnagar
Actually, Sanjeev, a Dalit resident of Bhokarheri village of Muzaffarnagar district, was married to a Dalit girl from Rajput dominated Kalindi village of Meerut. On Saturday afternoon, Sanjeev reached the wedding hall in Kalindi village with his wedding procession. The well-dressed baraatis were preparing for the wedding when suddenly some strong Rajput youths of the village, who came in a Scorpio car, attacked the baraatis.
The attackers beat them with sticks
The attackers chased the baraatis and beat them with sticks, even the groom and the women were not spared. The Dalit baraatis somehow reached Sardhana police station 4 km away and narrated their ordeal to the police and demanded protection. The baraatis have also accused the strong attackers of looting the baraatis. Groom Sanjeev told that the attackers looted two gold rings and bracelets from him, and also snatched the bag from the groom’s uncle which contained Rs 2 lakh.
The groom made these allegations against the attackers
Groom Sanjeev said, “They beat us up, beat me too and said that they will not let the procession of Chamars go. As soon as we reached the baraat ghar, they attacked us.” Groom’s sister Radha Rani said, we had just reached, they attacked us, we were not even halfway out of the car, they pulled us out of the window and beat us, they were drunk and there were 10-12 boys, they were saying that the procession of Chamars will not go here, he was calling himself the Pradhan’s son.
Police sent the injured to the hospital for treatment
The police of Sardhana police station sent the injured baraatis to the hospital for treatment and informed the senior officers of the district about the incident. Understanding the seriousness of the matter, Meerut’s SP Rural Rakesh Mishra himself reached the police station. Meerut’s Sardhana police station remained filled with baraatis for several hours. Due to this, the wedding rituals were also stopped and the girl’s side in the village was holding their breath. The girl’s family including the bride kept waiting for the wedding procession. When the police at the police station tried to convince the baraatis to complete the wedding rituals, the scared baraatis refused to go to the village without police protection.
The wedding took place in the presence of the police
Later, the officials sent police force to the village with the baraatis, only then the baraatis could muster the courage to take the baraati to the village. The police have taken two accused youths into custody, and are searching for the rest. Police investigation revealed that earlier, outside the baraati house, some youths of the Rajput community of the village had an altercation with some Dalit baraatis over a minor issue, then these youths of the village, along with their friends, beat up the baraatis. The police force sent to free the baraatis from fear remained stationed in the village till the bride’s departure.
